Off Roading…Wyoming style.

May 25, 2007 at 4:53 am (Ranch Life)

Well, nothing much happened for the most part of today. I just got started on learning my way around the kitchen and what duties I’ll have as a waitress (which involves serving, cleaning up after meals, preparing for the next meal and whatnot) and also went into town (it’s a big deal cause town is an hour away) to try on the shirt we’ll be using for waitressing. That was fun to be able to see some of Jackson and drive thru the country. I can’t explain how beautiful it is out here. If you’ve been before, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I’ll try to post some pictures on my day off.

Well, we had dinner and then went to this informational meeting about grizzlies, wolves, and mountain lions about how to live with them, how to help keep them from coming near places of living and what to do if you meet one. It was good although a little long (2hrs). Well, on the way back our Chef was driving (Chef Jason, who’s 22 and an amazing cook). I’m in the very back of a 15 passenger van that has been jacked up and the engine sounds like it’s hoarse. Well, as we get closer to the ranch the road is getting bumpier and we had made several sudden stops because of elk and such. Before we know it, Jason proceeds to go off the road onto a trail. He is going off roading with 15 people in a jacked up van. We’re going on these back trails, go through a creek and over some major bumps (I almost hit my head several times) while we’re all cracking up. It was definitely the most excitment I’d had all day.

Anyways, it’s off to bed for me as I have to get up at 6:30am for the breakfast shift. From what I gather this’ll be late for us as we will begin having staff breakfast at 6:30am when guests start arriving. Yikes. Till next time….

Adventures already…

May 23, 2007 at 9:56 pm (Ranch Life)

Well, I’m here finally. Here meaning Turpin Meadow Ranch.  And it took me longer than expected. I hadn’t even got to Wyoming when I started having adventures. I made it safely from Columbia to Atlanta and from Atlanta to Denver. Both of my flights had been Delta but my connecting flight to Jackson was United Airline. When I picked up my tickets in Columbia I was unable to get my ticket for United meaning I had to get it in Denver. Well, I got my ticket at the gate and realized that I didn’t have a seat assignment. Being tired and having been traveling for many hours already, I didn’t really think about. Well, when they finally started boarding they announced that the flight had been weight restricted. Meaning they could only take 33 passengers when they had booked 37. When they said that and I found out I wasn’t going to make the flight I started laughing.  First time flying by myself and they bump me off my flight! I was laughing to myself the whole time.  When I went up to the service desk I told the lady that I been bumped off. The first thing that came out of her mouth was, “How old are you?” hahaha Well anyways, they ended up putting me up in a hotel overnight, giving me two meal vouchers, and a free roundtrip ticket for anywhere in the continental US. So, I spent the night all by myself in a huge hotel, had roomservice and tried to sleep. I kept waking up thinking that I was going to miss my shuttle back to the airport and with the time change I was feeling like it was 7 or 8 in the morning when it was 4. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep all that well. So, my flight flew out of Denver at 11:15am.

I made it finally to Jackson and was greeted by two Turpin Meadow ranch employees. The drive out to the ranch (which was about 45 min long) was amazing. I saw bison {not buffalo, that’s slang ;) }, elk, and antelope. They told me that they see coyotes and grizzly’s quite often. How exciting! :) It’s gorgeous here and I’m absolutely blown away by the display of God’s amazing creativity and beauty. Everyone here is very nice and friendly. I have yet to remember everyone’s names and what they do but I do know that I’ll be working with Jason, the head chef, in the kitchen.

Today they’re just letting me get situated and stuff and tomorrow I’ll begin my orientation with the kitchen.

For anyone that’s interested, I have a skype number. If you have a skype account let me know. It’s a free internet calling thing for people that have skype to each other. I also have a number that is local to South Carolina that you can call that’s free if you’re local. The number is 803.454.9863. If I don’t answer you can leave a message and I’ll get back to you sometime. I can also call people unlimited in the US from my skype. I don’t have cell phone service at the ranch but may possibly have it in town. I don’t know. But the best way to contact me is either email, snail mail, facebook, or skype. Well, let me know if you have questions. I love all of y’all and I will try to update about once a week.

In Christ,

Britt
